About The Rotation

The Rotation is a small, weird corner of the internet where music taste gets scouted like a basketball prospect. You name five artists you actually listen to (not your most impressive picks, your real rotation), and we press that taste onto a historical NBA team-season, packaged as a fake vinyl record sleeve, complete with a team fit, a rating, and a starting five of players mapped one-to-one against your five artists.

The idea started from a simple observation: sports fandom and music fandom are built out of the same material. Both are about identity, era, and taste as much as they’re about the thing itself. The 2008 Celtics feel like a specific sound the same way a specific rap crew from a specific year feels like a specific sound. The Run TMC Warriors, the Grit-and-Grind Grizzlies, the Lob City Clippers: these aren’t just rosters, they’re vibes with a jump shot. The Rotation exists to make that connection explicit and, hopefully, funny.

How the matching works, conceptually

When you submit your five artists, we don’t look up a spreadsheet of “this rapper equals this team.” Instead, the system reasons about each artist’s genre, era, energy, and cultural lane, then thinks about how those five things combine as a group, not as five isolated data points. From there it shortlists a handful of candidate team-seasons pulled from the NBA’s full 75-plus-year history and picks the one whose pace, playing style, and cultural moment actually rhyme with the sound of your list. We deliberately avoid lazy shortcuts, like assuming an artist’s hometown or a celebrity’s courtside habits should dictate the answer. The goal is a genuine sonic and cultural match, not a trivia answer. Once a team-season is picked, each of your five artists gets mapped to a specific real player who was actually on that roster that year, matched loosely by role: your biggest star becomes the franchise player, your most obscure pick becomes the cult role player, your guilty pleasure becomes the instant-offense sixth man.

It won’t be right in any measurable sense, because there’s no measurable sense in which it could be. That’s the point. It’s a party trick, a conversation starter, and hopefully a decent excuse to argue with your friends about both your music taste and your basketball opinions at the same time.

It’s a side project made because the idea was too fun not to build: equal parts basketball history nerd-out and an excuse to argue about music with strangers on the internet. There’s no editorial staff and no affiliation with any outlet, league, label, or artist beyond what’s disclosed above.
